Job Summary

Incarnate Word Catholic Church is a lively community grounded in worship, service, and fidelity to our Catholic Faith. One of the foundational elements of our parish is the celebration of the Eucharist. There are six celebrations of the Sunday liturgy each weekend, accommodating various liturgical preferences embodied in the congregation.

Incarnate Word Catholic Church is seeking a Music Director that will be responsible for planning and leading music at three of the weekend liturgies (1 on Saturday evening, 2 on Sunday morning), weddings, funerals, and other major liturgies. They will also be expected to supervise and train other musicians, choirs, and cantors as needed to support worship by the congregation. They will collaborate with other members of the parish staff in ongoing improvement of weekend liturgies and integration with the overall parish mission of Making God’s Love Visible. The position is somewhat flexible and can be offered as either full-time or part-time. Salary is dependent on experience and qualifications.

Job Responsibilities

Musical

Organist for 5pm Saturday mass and the 8:45 and 10:30 am Sunday Masses

Director of Adult Choir

  • 10:30am Sunday Mass
  • Weekly rehearsals with adult choir
  • Recruit and Maintain membership in Adult Choir

Responsible for Cantor Program

  • Recruit and Maintain membership in the program
  • Provide for training of cantors
  • Rehearse with cantors

Plan / Direct / Play music for Holy Days and Special Feasts as needed

Organist for Weddings and Funerals in Parish Church as needed

Recruit and Direct instrumentalists as needed

Liturgical / Pastoral

Serve in planning all seasons and feasts

Resource person in all areas of Music

  • Plan Seasons of Liturgical Year
  • Prepare weekly music sheet for Sunday Celebrations
  • Plan music for Funerals and Weddings as needed

Organizational

Organize music for choir rehearsals, supervise music librarian

Update and curate music library

Attend parish staff meetings when scheduled

Maintain budget for Music Department, working with Parish business manager

Responsible for music files for seasons and celebrations

Job Requirements

  • Past experience of successful music ministry in a parish setting is preferred.
  • High proficiency in organ and/or piano (if not both, a willingness and ability to learn).
  • Experience singing without accompaniment, e.g., chant or acapella.
  • Experience directing a choir and offering basic vocal coaching for cantors.
  • Knowledge of the patrimony of Catholic sacred music.
  • Experience leading other musicians in collaboration for music at liturgy. 
  • Provide music for additional services during Holy Week, Christmas, holy days, sacramental celebrations funerals, and holy hours.
  • Ability to collaborate with fellow parish staff in the wider work of ministering to the parish community and growing in personal holiness.
