Job Summary

The PSR Catechist plays a vital role in the faith formation of children and youth in grades K–8 (or specified range), teaching them the fundamentals of the Catholic faith, preparing them for sacraments, and nurturing their spiritual growth. This role is both educational and pastoral, serving the Church’s mission to evangelize and form disciples of Christ.

Job Responsibilities

  • Prepare and teach weekly religion classes using parish-approved curriculum and materials.
  • Provide engaging, age-appropriate instruction in Scripture, Catholic doctrine, liturgy, prayer, and moral living.
  • Create a welcoming, respectful, and faith-filled classroom environment.
  • Guide students in prayer and spiritual development.
  • Collaborate with the DRE/Faith Formation Coordinator regarding curriculum, student needs, and sacramental preparation.
  • Attend catechist training sessions, retreats, and planning meetings as required.
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with parents, especially regarding attendance, behavior, and upcoming events.
  • Assist in preparing students for sacraments (Reconciliation, Eucharist, Confirmation) as needed.
  • Model Catholic values and a personal commitment to the faith.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all children in your care and follow diocesan child protection policies.

Job Requirements

  • Practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church.

  • Strong understanding of Catholic teachings and willingness to continue personal faith formation.

  • Love for children/youth and a desire to share the Catholic faith.

  • Good communication, organization, and classroom management skills.

  • Willingness to work under the direction of the DRE and collaborate with fellow catechists.

  • Must complete required diocesan training, including Safe Environment certification and background check.
