Job Summary

The Assistant Catechist supports the lead catechist in providing faith formation to students in the Parish School of Religion (PSR) or similar religious education program. This role assists with lesson preparation, classroom management, and sacramental preparation activities while helping create a welcoming, faith-centered learning environment for children.

Job Responsibilities

Classroom Support

  • Assist the lead catechist during class sessions with activities, lessons, and discussions.

  • Help manage the classroom environment to ensure safety, respect, and engagement.

  • Prepare, distribute, and collect classroom materials as needed.

Faith Formation Assistance

  • Support the teaching of religious education lessons and sacramental preparation.

  • Help students participate in prayer, reflection, and liturgical activities.

  • Encourage positive spiritual growth and understanding among students.

Student & Parent Communication

  • Greet students and parents at arrival and dismissal.

  • Communicate basic classroom information or updates as directed by the lead catechist.

  • Maintain a supportive and respectful presence during all interactions.

Program & Operational Support

  • Assist with setup and cleanup of classrooms and shared spaces.

  • Help with events related to the religious education program, such as retreats, rehearsals, and sacramental celebrations.

  • Follow all child safety and Safe Environment guidelines and maintain required training.

Job Requirements

  • Interest in supporting the faith formation of children.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with the lead catechist and program staff.

  • Strong communication skills and a patient, supportive demeanor.

  • Commitment to Safe Environment protocols and any required parish or diocesan training.

  • Reliability and consistency in attending scheduled classes and events.
