Job Summary
The Catechist for the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) program is responsible for guiding children in a deep, prayerful relationship with God through hands-on, Montessori-based catechesis. The catechist prepares and maintains the atrium (sacred learning space), leads sessions, collaborates with parents and parish staff, and fosters a calm, reverent environment that nurtures the spiritual development of each child.
Job Responsibilities
- Spiritual Formation & Guidance
- Present the core themes of CGS in a way that honors the child’s capacity for wonder, contemplation, and personal relationship with God.
- Lead children in prayer, Scripture reflections, and presentations rooted in liturgy and Scripture.
- Model reverence and joy in the faith.
- Atrium Preparation & Maintenance
- Set up and care for the atrium environment to ensure it remains orderly, beautiful, and conducive to prayerful engagement.
- Prepare materials in alignment with the CGS curriculum.
- Ensure all materials are complete and in good condition
- Session Leadership
- Guide children through individual or small-group work with CGS presentations.
- Maintain records of lessons given to individual children
- Observe and respond to each child’s spiritual needs with sensitivity.
- Maintain a peaceful, respectful, and focused atmosphere.
- Collaboration & Communication
- Partner with parents and families to support the child’s faith formation and communicate what children are learning in the atrium.
- Work with parish staff and fellow catechists to coordinate schedules, events, and sacramental preparation as needed.
- Attend planning meetings and ongoing formation sessions.
- Support material making for the atria
- Professional Development
- Hold certification in CGS for the appropriate level (Level Toddler, I, II, or III).
- Stay current with CGS pedagogy through continuing education and spiritual formation.
Job Requirements
- Completion of CGS Formation for the appropriate level (required).
- Active, practicing Catholic in full communion with the Church.
- Experience working with children ages 0–12 in a catechetical, educational, or pastoral setting preferred.
- Strong understanding of Catholic liturgy, Scripture, and tradition.
- Ability to foster a peaceful, respectful, and prayerful learning environment.
- Good organizational skills and attention to detail in material preparation.
- Willingness to collaborate as part of a parish or school catechetical team.
