Position Overview:
The Cook at Simon Says Early Childhood Center is responsible for preparing and serving healthy, balanced meals to children and staff, ensuring that all meals meet dietary and nutritional guidelines. This role also involves maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen, adhering to health and safety standards, and working collaboratively with staff to accommodate any dietary restrictions or preferences. The Cook plays a vital role in supporting the overall mission of the center by providing wholesome meals that contribute to the health and happiness of the children in our care.
 

Job Responsibilities

Meal Preparation and Service:
o    Prepare and serve nutritious meals for children and staff, including breakfast, lunch, and snacks, in accordance with planned menus.
o    Follow dietary guidelines, ensuring meals meet nutrition standards and accommodate any dietary restrictions, allergies, or preferences (e.g., vegetarian, gluten-free).
o    Ensure all food is prepared fresh and served in appropriate portion sizes for young children.

Kitchen Management:
o    Manage kitchen inventory, including ordering ingredients and supplies, ensuring food is stored properly, and keeping track of expiration dates.
o    Maintain a clean and organized kitchen, including washing dishes, cleaning surfaces, and sanitizing equipment.
o    Ensure proper food safety protocols are followed, including food storage, handling, and preparation, to minimize the risk of contamination and adhere to health regulations.

Compliance with Health and Safety Standards:
o    Follow state and local health regulations for food preparation, kitchen cleanliness, and sanitation.
o    Ensure compliance with food allergies, labeling, and handling procedures to ensure the safety of all children and staff.
o    Keep detailed records of meal plans, inventory, and any food-related concerns.

Collaboration with Staff:
o    Work closely with center staff to accommodate special dietary needs or preferences and adjust meal plans as necessary.
o    Assist in planning menus for the week or month, providing input on nutritious options that align with the center’s values and meet the children's developmental needs.
o    Participate in team meetings to discuss meal planning, food-related issues, and center events where meals may be involved.

Faith-Based Integration:
o    As a Catholic-based center, be mindful of the faith and values that guide our work, ensuring meals are served in a manner that supports the well-being of children and the community.
o    Respect religious observances that may influence dietary practices (e.g., during Lent or feast days) and provide options that align with the faith.

Record Keeping and Documentation:
o    Maintain a clean and organized filing system for food orders, menus, and food-related reports.
o    Track food waste and work to minimize unnecessary food loss.
o    Ensure documentation of dietary needs, allergies, and food preferences for all children is up-to-date and accessible.
 

Job Requirements

Qualifications:
•    High school diploma or equivalent required; culinary degree or food service certification preferred.
•    Prior experience in food preparation and cooking, preferably in a school, daycare, or similar setting.
•    Knowledge of nutrition and dietary guidelines for young children.
•    Ability to follow detailed instructions, maintain kitchen cleanliness, and manage food safety standards.
•    Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
•    Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
•    Compassionate, patient, and understanding when working with young children.
•    Basic understanding of Catholic teachings and the ability to respect and reflect the values of the faith-based environment.
 

Personal Characteristics:
•    A passion for providing healthy, nutritious meals to children in a nurturing, faith-based environment.
•    Friendly and approachable with excellent communication skills, particularly with children and staff.
•    Reliable, responsible, and committed to maintaining a high standard of food preparation and service.
