Job Summary:

The Custodian at Christ the King Parish and School is responsible for ensuring the cleanliness, safety, and general upkeep of the parish and school facilities. This individual plays a vital role in creating a welcoming, sanitary, and organized environment for students, staff, parishioners, and visitors. The role includes daily cleaning duties, light maintenance tasks, and supporting parish and school events through setup and breakdown of spaces.

Job Responsibilities

Cleaning & Sanitation:

  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, and scrub floors in classrooms, offices, hallways, restrooms, and communal areas.

  • Clean and sanitize restrooms; restock supplies such as soap, toilet paper, and paper towels.

  • Empty trash and recycling receptacles; replace liners and remove waste to appropriate disposal areas.

  • Dust and wipe down surfaces, including desks, counters, furniture, window sills, and fixtures.

  • Wash windows, walls, interior glass, and doors as needed.

Maintenance & Facility Support:

  • Set up and dismantle tables, chairs, and equipment for events, meetings, and liturgical functions.

  • Report maintenance concerns (e.g., plumbing, lighting, HVAC) to designated personnel or management.

  • Assist with seasonal duties including lawn maintenance, leaf removal, and snow/ice clearing on walkways and entrances.

  • Monitor and secure the building as needed; ensure doors are locked and alarms set after hours if assigned.

Compliance & Safety:

  • Follow proper cleaning protocols and use cleaning agents and equipment according to safety guidelines.

  • Maintain organized janitorial closets and inventory of cleaning supplies.

  • Ensure compliance with parish, school, and Archdiocesan health and safety standards.

Additional Duties:

  • Provide support for special projects, school activities, or parish events.

  • Collaborate with staff to coordinate cleaning around school and liturgical schedules.

  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Pastor or Principal.

Job Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.

  • Previous custodial, janitorial, or maintenance experience preferred, especially in a school or church setting.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions in English.

  • Capable of operating cleaning equipment such as floor scrubbers, vacuums, and power washers.

  • Basic understanding of maintenance and repair tasks (e.g., changing light bulbs, minor plumbing fixes).

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks including bending, reaching, and standing for extended periods.

  • Dependable, self-motivated, and respectful of the Catholic mission of Christ the King.

Working Conditions:

  • This role may require early mornings, evenings, or occasional weekends to support events or seasonal needs.

  • Work may be performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
