Job Summary

To prepare for and service funerals; perform general maintenance at all locations of Catholic Cemeteries; a multifaceted position; grounds employees are members of SIUE Local 1

Job Responsibilities

· Knowledge of all sections and equipment

· Opening and closing of graves and crypts

· Tent set up and take down

· Service graveside funerals

· Placement of casket in crypt, grave or outer container and back filling grave

· Install memorial foundations, set or reset memorial work

· Disinterment work

· General maintenance and Endowed Care work, not limited to lawnmowing, weed trimming, shrub trimming and tree care

· Training provided

· Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

· Light duty work is not available

Job Requirements

· High School Diploma or GED equivalent

· Commercial Driver’s License, or working towards CDL

· Equipment operation:

o Tractor trailer

o Backhoe grave digging machine

o Hi-Lift tractor

o Truck boom crane operator

o Basket lift machine

o 12’, 6’, and smaller motorized lawn mowers

o Motorized push mower

o Riding, backpack and hand pushed leaf blowers

o Hedge, tree trimming and string trimming equipment

o Chain saws and snow blowers

o Other power equipment

· Hand skills:

o shovel and broom usage

o hoes

o rakes

o cleaning up branches

o painting

o laying of boards

· Road sealing and curb maintenance

· Concrete and masonry work

· Minor mechanical repairs

 

Relationships Requirements

· Ability to work independently, with strong interpersonal skills & reliable follow-through

· Ability to work with a team of other grounds employees; both Union, full-time grounds & seasonal grounds employees

· Ability to take direction from Executive Director, Managing Directors & Leads

· Ability to be courteous to visitors to Catholic Cemeteries and direct them to office
