Job Summary

Substitutes are responsible for maintaining the educational experience and classroom environment in the absence of the regular teacher or aide. This individual must demonstrate familiarity with the curriculum, methods, procedures, schedule, and available resources, and adapt to the specific routines and expectations of various teachers. Substitutes ensures that the classroom runs smoothly, supports children's developmental needs, and upholds the safety and cleanliness of the learning environment.

Job Responsibilities

  •  Classroom Management & Instruction: Demonstrate familiarity with the curriculum, teaching methods, and classroom routines, ensuring continuity in the teacher’s absence. Adapt to the unique teaching styles and routines of different educators to maintain a smooth and effective classroom operation.
  •  Promote Child Development: Support activities and opportunities that encourage curiosity, exploration, and problem-solving, tailored to the developmental levels and learning styles of children.
  •  Supervision and Behavior Support: Supervise children in the classroom and provide a supportive environment that encourages appropriate individual and group behaviors.
  •  Maintain Positive Interactions: Interact with children in a warm, calm, and unhurried manner, fostering a positive and supportive relationship.
  •  Classroom Management: Maintain classroom discipline and provide a structured learning environment.
  •  Safety and Cleanliness: Maintain a clean, safe, and pleasant environment both indoors and outdoors,
  •  Health & Safety: Have a general understanding of nutrition, health, and first aid, maintaining up-to-date certifications.
  •  Christian Witness: Consistently use words and actions that clearly give witness to Gospel values and demonstrate living out the teachings of Jesus Christ. Give witness to Catholic values and adhere to the teachings of the Catholic Church through practices in life and work. Provide daily interactions and classroom practices to develop a faith-filled environment that nurtures the spiritual growth of children.
  •  Miscellaneous Duties: Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Knowledge & Experience Requirements

● Experience working with young children in an early childhood education setting is preferred.

● High school diploma or equivalent required; a degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field is a plus.

● Understanding of child development principles and a passion for fostering young children’s growth.

● Ability to adapt to diverse teaching styles and classroom environments.

● Completion of the Archdiocese Safe Environment Program.


Skills & Attitudes Required for Success in Job
● Strong written and oral communication skills.
● Ability to follow directions and work collaboratively with administration and teaching staff.
● Patience, empathy, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Relationships Requirements
● Ability to work effectively in supporting the lead teacher and administration.
● Ability to engage and work collaboratively with the pastor, parish office staff, school personnel, students, parents, and volunteers.
