Job Summary
The K–8 Substitute Teacher carries out the educational program in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. This role involves managing a safe, respectful classroom environment and delivering lessons according to the teacher’s plans or school curriculum. The substitute fosters student learning, upholds school policies, and maintains continuity of instruction.
Job Responsibilities

Follow lesson plans left by the regular teacher and adapt as needed to ensure student learning.

Maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.

Instruct students in a variety of subjects including math, science, English language arts, social studies, and other subjects across grades K–8 as needed.

Manage student behavior and enforce classroom rules and school policies.

Take attendance and maintain accurate records of classroom activities.

Leave a summary of the day’s activities for the returning teacher.

Communicate with administrators or grade-level teams as needed for support or clarification.

Ensure the safety and well-being of students at all times.
Job Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Valid substitute teaching permit or teaching credential (as required by state/district).

Previous experience working with children or in a classroom setting preferred.

Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

Strong classroom management and organizational skills.

Flexibility and adaptability to work in various grade levels and subject areas.
