Job Summary
Provide oversight and counsel regarding Cemeteries’ finances and financial operations; work with Cemeteries’ management and accounts specialists.
Job Responsibilities
- Responsible for the organization’s accounting practices, the maintenance of its fiscal records and the preparation of its financial reports.
- Design, implement and maintain internal controls relevant to the preparation and fair representation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.
- Ensure conformance to all financial policies and procedures, including those that are Archdiocesan-specific and recommend policy changes as needed.
- Safeguard the organization’s assets.
- Provide management with complete, timely and accurate financial information to aid strategic and operating procedures.
- Prepare and coordinate the development of the annual budget.
- Develop an understanding of cemetery operations and act as an advisor to all levels of management on financial matters.
- Prepare financial, statistical and analytical reports for special projects and other activities, including estimates of monthly requirements, cemetery income budgets, inventories of graves and crypts, cemetery sales analysis and other reports.
- Prepare, organize and manage all monthly, quarterly and year-end financial reporting and closings in liaison with cemetery accounts specialist and Archdiocesan Finance Office.
- Develop financial forecasts and estimates on both a short- and long-term basis based on investment income and financial activity.
- Assist with the development, integration and maintenance of accounting software, including CemeteryPro and Lawson.
- Work with other organization managers to ensure coordination of activities of mutual financial concern.
- Coordinate and assist with internal and external auditors, as needed.
- Liaise with Archdiocesan CFO, Finance Office and St. Louis Archdiocesan Fund
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or equivalent professional experience with a thorough understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), MBA and/or CPA a plus.
- At least five years of accounting experience and knowledge of finance, budgeting and cost control principles.
- Member of the Catholic Church with understanding of Catholic faith practices preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Attention to detail, with analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to learn and understand the entire organization from a financial standpoint for the performance of the assigned duties, and take a hands-on rather than conceptual approach for proper execution.
- Ability to work independently with strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to represent the Catholic Cemeteries in a credible fashion both internally and externally.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written form with auditors, vendors, employees at all levels and other outside personnel as required.
- Ability to work effectively with colleagues.
