Job Summary

Position Summary

The position of School Nurse is designed to provide parish members with health services that focus on the holistic integration of the body, mind and spirit. The School Nurse assesses, plans and implements nursing care, short of invasive treatment, that addresses the strengths and deficits of the individual and the school across the life span. The School Nurse functions as a facilitator of health, promoting when possible the parish’s mission of healing.

Job Responsibilities

Duties & Responsibilities

· As a Health Educator:

o Creating and providing updated educational materials on health issues across the life span.

o Providing classes on health topics that address the members’ assessed needs.

o Providing exhibits, screenings, to increase a person’s awareness of their health and its relationship to their faith.

· As a Health Counselor:

o Increasing the parish’s awareness of health needs by assessing groups and individuals.

o Offering private sessions with individuals to assist them in modifying life styles, adjusting to disease, coping with chronic illness and other health concerns.

o Visiting members in hospitals, homes and nursing homes to provide holistic health caring, as needed or referred by/with home visitors, Eucharistic ministers, etc.

· As a Health Referral Agent:

o Referring clients to appropriate health care resources within community when the assessed health care needs are beyond the skill and scope of practice of the parish nurse.

o Assisting persons in receiving health care assistance when they are unable to do so.

o Assisting persons to understand and effectively use the health care system.

· As a Health Care Advocate:

o Facilitating use of volunteers, Caring Hearts, Home Visitors, Eucharistic Ministers, within the church by developing and supporting volunteers providing supportive services for healing.

o Working as a colleague with health care professionals and clergy within the church and community to expand the concept of holistic care.

· Administrative Duties:

o Maintain confidential locked files on all client contacts.

o Report parish nurse activities to the Pastor / Pastoral Associate quarterly or as requested.

Job Requirements

Knowledge & Experience Requirements

· Current Registered Nurse license in the state of Missouri

· Minimum of five years clinical nursing experience

· Experience in assessment and evaluation of individual and group needs

 

Skills & Attitudes Required for Success in Job

· Strong Catholic faith and calling into this field of ministry

· Successful completion of the Parish Safe Environment process

· Strong communication skills both orally and in writing

· Able to work collaboratively as a member of the ministry team

· Self-motivated and self-directed
