Job Summary

Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis is hiring a Sacristan

The Sacristan plays a vital role in the liturgical life of the Church by ensuring that the worship space, sacred vessels, and vestments are properly prepared for the celebration of the Mass and other sacraments. Rooted in a spirit of reverence and service, the Sacristan supports the clergy and liturgical ministers in upholding the dignity and beauty of the Catholic liturgy.

Job Responsibilities

Liturgical Preparation

  • Prepare the church and sacristy for daily Mass, Sunday liturgies, funerals, weddings, baptisms, and other liturgical celebrations

  • Set out all items needed for the liturgy, including chalices, patens, ciboria, cruets, linens, vestments, books, candles, and incense

  • Ensure proper colors and vestments are used according to the liturgical calendar

Sacred Vessels & Linens

  • Clean, polish, and care for sacred vessels and liturgical items with reverence

  • Launder altar linens according to proper liturgical standards

  • Maintain an inventory of liturgical supplies (hosts, wine, candles, incense, etc.) and notify leadership when reordering is needed

Liturgical Environment

  • Assist in decorating the church for liturgical seasons (e.g., Advent, Lent, Easter)

  • Ensure the sanctuary and sacristy are clean, orderly, and prayerful environments

  • Replace holy water fonts and maintain cleanliness of devotional areas (e.g., votive candles)

Clerical & Pastoral Support

  • Coordinate with priests, deacons, altar servers, lectors, and extraordinary ministers to ensure smooth liturgies

  • Support visiting clergy with sacristy orientation and preparation

  • Secure and lock sacred items and areas before and after liturgies

Job Requirements

  • Practicing Catholic in good standing with knowledge and love for the liturgy

  • Strong attention to detail and sense of reverence for sacred items

  • Ability to work independently and maintain confidentiality

  • Availability to serve early mornings, evenings, weekends, and Holy Days
