Job Summary
The Catechetical Instructor is responsible for providing faithful, age-appropriate catechesis rooted in the teachings of the Catholic Church. This individual will engage children, parents, and/or adults in spiritual and doctrinal formation, helping them grow in their understanding of Scripture, sacraments, liturgy, and moral life. The role may be exercised in a parish religious education program, Catholic school, or combined family faith formation setting.
Job Responsibilities
For Children:
- Plan and deliver catechetical lessons aligned with Church teaching and diocesan curriculum guidelines.
- Prepare students for sacraments such as First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation.
- Foster a prayerful and respectful classroom or group environment that encourages spiritual growth.
- Incorporate Scripture, liturgical seasons, and Church tradition into lessons.
- Use age-appropriate methods and materials to engage learners.
For Parents and Adults:
- Offer catechetical instruction for parents of children preparing for sacraments.
- Lead adult faith formation sessions, Bible studies, or RCIA/OCIA programs as needed.
- Provide support and resources for families to continue faith formation at home.
- Address theological or pastoral questions with charity and clarity in accordance with Church teaching.
General Duties:
- Collaborate with parish or school staff to coordinate schedules, events, and sacramental programs.
- Maintain attendance records and assess understanding through informal or formal evaluations.
- Participate in catechist formation opportunities and ongoing professional development.
- Attend parish or school liturgical celebrations and events as appropriate.
- Comply with all diocesan Safe Environment protocols and policies.
Job Requirements
- Practicing Catholic in good standing with a strong knowledge of and fidelity to the teachings of the Catholic Church.
- Bachelor's degree in Theology, Religious Education, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Certification in catechesis or willingness to complete diocesan certification program.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Experience teaching or leading faith formation sessions for one or more age groups (children, teens, adults).
- Completion of diocesan Safe Environment training and successful background check.
